weeks in a year | How many weeks in a year?

we all know that there are 12 months, 52 weeks, and 365 days in a year but this scenario is not always true. so today I’ll be discussing how many weeks in a year in a more precise way to make this point very clear.

How many weeks in a year?

There are 52 weeks in a year and to be more precise there are 52.142857
weeks or 52 weeks 1 day & 6 hours

Calculation of weeks in a year

Weeks in a common year

A common year is a year with 365 days where a month of February has 28 days in a common year.

one calendar common year has 365 days

1 Normal/common year = 365 days = (365 days ) ÷ ( 7 days / week )

= 52.14285 weeks = 52 weeks + 1 day

Weeks in a leap year

A leap year is a year with 366 days where a month of February has 29 days in a leap year.

one calendar leap year has 366 days

1 leap year = 366 days = ( 366 days ) ÷ ( 7 day/week )

= 52.28571 weeks = 52 weeks + 2 days

what are weeks and years?

Before understanding how many weeks in a year we need to understand about a common year and leap year

To calculate it let us first understand what is weeks and years?

rotation on axis responsible for weeks and years so from the picture, the earth’s complete Revolution around the sun, This is called the time period of 1 year.

It is of a one-year duration. According to the gregorian calendar or modern calendar year is of two types

common year: The year which is of 365 days and 6 hrs

Leap year: The year which is of 366 days

Now in a common year, there are 365 days i.e 365 day= ( 7 weekly days × 52 ) + 1 day

∴ Hence there are 52 weeks

Now for a leap year, there are 366 days

366 days =( 7 weekly days × 52 ) + 2 days

Hence there are 52 weeks in a leap year as well.

How many weeks in a year chart

Year Leap year Number of weeks Number of days

2018        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365
2019        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365
2020        yes           52 weeks and 2 day 366
2021        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365
2022        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365
2023        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365
2024        yes           52 weeks and 2 day 366
2025        NO           52 weeks and 1 day 365

Why are there 52 weeks during a year and not 48 weeks in a year though there are only 4 weeks per month (4 x 12 = 48)?

Explanation: Allow me to explain in detail why it’s 52 weeks, not 48 weeks.

There are seven days in a week and 4 weeks in a whole month,

If you multiply 7 (days) times 4 (weeks) you get 28 (days) in a month, right?

yeah, in February we do, however in the remaining months we have 30 to 31 days in a month.

okay, we have 12 months in a year. Now, multiply 12 (months) times 4 (weeks) that’s 48 weeks!

I thought we suppose to have 52 weeks in a year?

we do allow me to explain

Remember on average we actually have 30 days for every month which means two extra days are to be included

since 4 weeks can only be divided into 30 days 7 times in which 28 is the closest prime for one total month.

so excluding February, multiply 11 (months) time 2 (extra days ) that’s the other 22 extra days in a year.

Now, divide 22 (days) by 7 (1 week) = 3 extra weeks added to 48

that’s 51 weeks! Hold on we are missing one more week.

The other weeks come from the 31-day mark throughout the year which is added to the 51 weeks

which is why there are 52 weeks in a year.

How to find whether the given year is a leap year/intercalary year or not?

A leap year is a year with 366 days where a month of February has 29 days in a leap year.

Now to find whether the year is a leap year or not we just need to follow two simple rules

  1. we have a leap year when the number represented by the last two digits of the given year is divisible by 4
  2. A century year is a leap year only when a number represented by the first two digits of the year is divisible by 4

Now let’s look at a few examples to understand in a better way

  • whether the year 1904 is a leap year or not. The number represented by the last two digits is (04) which is divisible by 4 [ 04 ÷ 4 = 01 → 04 is divisible by 4 ]. so the year 1904 was a leap year.
  • Now let’s find out whether the year 1982 was a leap year or not. Here the number represented by the last two digits is 82 which is not divisible by 4 [ 82 ÷ 4 = 20.5 → 82 is not divisible by 4 ]. so 1982 was not a leap year.
  • Finally, we shall find out whether the year 2100 will be a leap year or not. As the year 2100 will be a century year we have to check if the number represented by the first two digits 21 is divisible by 4 [ 21÷ 4 = 5.25 → 21 is not divisible by 4 ]. so the year 2100 will not be a leap year.

Non-leap year

The simple definition of non-leap year is a year that does not contain the day February 29

GREGORIAN CALENDAR → 365 days

The gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582, which cycles every 400 years.

The gregorian calendar has the average number of weeks across all the year is 52.1775 weeks.

1 Gregorian calendar year = 365.2425 days = (365.2425 days ) ÷ ( 7 days / week )

= 52.1775 weeks

understanding the Lunar calendar

Have you ever wondered why the dates of Islamic events change each year?

this is because Muslims follow the Lunar calendar which is based upon the monthly cycle of the moon.

Each lunar cycle is approx 29.5 days,

so the months of a lunar calendar alternate between 29 and 30 days, and each year is around 354.37 days.

LUNAR CALENDAR → 354.37 days

The Lunar calendar year has 354 days

1 Lunar calendar year = 354.37 days = (354.37 days ) ÷ ( 7 days / week )

= 50.62428 weeks

The Lunar calendar has the average number of weeks across all the year is 50.62428 weeks.

Therefore, a LUNAR CALENDAR has around 11 days per year less.

Although the gregorian calendar is widely used in most countries the traditional lunar calendar is still used in Islamic countries to determine Islamic festival such as RAMADAN, HAJJ, etc

In Islam, the QURAN stipulates that the new moon should be used to mark the first day of each month. so the Islam calendar starts with the months of Muharram and ends with the months of DHU AL-HIJJAH.

History of weeks and year?

Throughout the history of calendars, the great majority of civilizations developed a different calendar based on 12 months in general

so one month is approximately the period of time it takes the moon to complete its orbit around the earth

and one year corresponds to the time it takes the earth to complete its orbit around the sun. A months last 29 to 30 days while a year lasts about 365 days.

During the year, there are approximately 12 months and 11 days based on this data different civilizations constructed two main types of calendar.

  • some choose to rely on the sun on upon and thus developed a solar calendar they accounted for the 11 missing days by adding one day to eleven of the months.
  • so they ended up with months that lasts about 30 or 31 days instead of 29 or 30 days others choose to focus on the moon and thus developed a lunar calendar.

Solar calendar and lunar calendar

They did so by disregarding the 11 days and ended up with a year that lasts about 354 days instead of 365 days.

Each of these calendars has it’s advantages and disadvantages.

The lunar calendar is helpful if you want to follow the phases of the moon each month begin with a new moon and has a full moon in the middle

This feature is absent in the solar calendar on the other hand solar calendar is a more reliable way to keep track of seasons because unlike the lunar calendar months do not change seasons from year to year.

Many people believed that the Islamic calendar is a lunar one yet upon close examination of the meaning of Islamic months it becomes clear

that most of the months define distinct seasonal events but what’s the point if the calendar week is lunar,

what’s the point of calling a month’s first spring if it can fall in spring, summer, autumn, and winter depending upon the year.

so it’s possible that the Islamic calendar is actually not lunar could it be solar, well probably not because the Quran tells Muslims to rely on the phases of the moon to organize their calendar

they will ask you concerning the new moon say they are appointed times for the people and the pilgrimage.

but it is neither a solar calendar nor a lunar calendar so what it is, well there is an alternative, the lunisolar calendar,

and the positive side of this type of calendar is that it has the advantages of both lunar and solar calendar.

it follows the moon phases while keeping months and seasons in sync. Moreover, it relies on upon both the sun and the moon, like is suggested in the Quran.

so how does the lunisolar calendar works?

During a year there are approximately 12 months and 11 days short the second year it is missing 22 days but a little

before the third year, the missing days accumulate to 30 this is equivalent to the duration of a month.

so the lunisolar calendar year is 365.25 days and the months is 29.53

Therefore a Leap month is added to compensate for the past missing days.

Julian calendar

The calendar which we use today in the western world originated from the Roman calendar evolved from the greek.

It is a lunar calendar with extra months inserted and so often to keeps the months in step with the seasons.

Unlike today The Roman year began with the march and the calendar consisted of 355 days which is about 12 lunar months.

In the intercalary months, Marsa Dounia’s is added when needed at the end of February.

when that happened February was shortened to 23 days, Julius Caesar took it upon himself to bring the calendar in line with the seasons

he ordered three intercalary months should be added to the end of the year and rearrange the length of the months giving them the present duration.

He eventually rejected the lunar months entirely and adopted the solar year which had an average length of 365.25 days

the four year leap year cycle was added to resolve the 25th of the day the reform took place on Jan 1, 45, BCE this changed the beginning of the year

from March 1st to January 1st as we know today the calendar was called Julian calendar for obvious reasons.

The seven-day week was followed by Judaism in Islam the week was set around a day arrest in religious practices.

Roman’s didn’t have a day of rest so their eight-day weeks cycle around market days.

An Extra Notes about the calendar

Eventually, astrologers assigned a planet to released to the 24 hrs of the day in a continual sequence this led to the roman seven-day cycle.

The Julian calendar was simple, but there was a small problem a problem was added up every year.

so the problem was that the 365.25 days year is 11 min and 15-sec longer than the true length of a tropical year after 128 years the seasons begin a whole day earlier.

That is why the Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII.

The changed he enacted resolved the shift at the beginning of each year set a standard for the length of a year in days and minutes and seconds among other things.
